Moody's athletic teams travel on sports-themed missions trips. Moody teams have ministered in countries such as China, France, Egypt, Nigeria, Slovakia, Turkey, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Columbia, Germany, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
Matina Binkley, a graduate from Moody and former point guard on the woman's basketball team, traveled to China over spring break of her senior year. The trip, along with one taken her sophomore year to Slovakia, were highlights of her sports career at Moody. To her, it was amazing to be able to be used physically by God to display and proclaim the message of Christ. It was incredible to be able to use sport as a means to connect with the Chinese people who live in a spiritually closed country. In reference to sport, Binkley said, "It was a bridge to common ground."
"The highlight of my trip was definitely sharing the gospel," Binkley explained. She recognized that, through the commonality of sport, she was able to talk about life with them, and then transition from her life to the life of Christ.
On one such experience in China, Binkley was able to share the gospel with 15 girls in a college dorm room. Binkley and a fellow teammate went to the dorm to hang out with some of the girls from the team. The Chinese girls started asking about the American players' lives and God opened an avenue for them to share the gospel. It was incredible to experience all 15 of the girls, including the translator, come to Christ.
Seeing these Chinese girls and translator come to Christ is incredible evidence that God does use sports to bring others to him. Matina still communicates with the woman's basketball team in China through e-mail.
